Thangka and Statue Consecration Ceremony |

The monks of Drepung Loseling Monastery will offer a special, one-time consecration ceremony this year to invest blessings into representations of the Buddha, Dharma and Sangha, such as statues, stupas, thangkas and sacred images, for personal devotion and practice use. |

Traditionally known as Rab-ne, this ceremony involves intensive preparatory rites and rituals of self-generation and the generation of deities into the material substances that are then used to fill the statues and other sacred objects. Invoking the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas through meditation, manta and music, grand offerings are made to the enlightened beings and their blessings are drawn and absorbed into the objects of consecration. |

Prior to the ceremony, the monks will demonstrate the traditional methods used for filling the statues with sacred texts, medicinal herbs and other precious articles. At the same time, participants will be able to observe the master thangka painters from the Norbulingka Institute as they put the finishing touches on the thangka paintings that will be displayed during the consecration ceremony. |

A consecration ceremony empowers and revitalizes every object of veneration and reverence brought to it into a sacred, holy and effective entity extremely worthy of veneration and reverence. When effectively performed, the Rab-ne ceremony also serves as a vehicle for transformation and the transmission of healing energies, and helps to clear away obstacles and negative energies from the home and the environment. |
