ABOUT THE EMORY-TIBET SCIENCE INITIATIVE

THE CONVERGENCE OF SCIENCE AND INNER VALUES

The Emory-Tibet Science Initiative (ETSI) is a unique educational endeavor, bringing together the best of the Western and Tibetan Buddhist intellectual traditions for their mutual enrichment and for the discovery of new knowledge. Our programs explore the convergence of science and inner values in an effort to address humanity’s greatest problems on more than a material level. By advancing an understanding of reality that incorporates both heart and mind, we believe we can find better ways to relieve human suffering.

Even as modern scientific research demonstrates the wide-ranging benefits attributable to qualities such as mindfulness, love, forgiveness, and compassion, the Tibetan science of mind offers time-tested techniques for effectively developing and strengthening these attributes. By creating bridges between these two bodies of knowledge, the Emory-Tibet Partnership facilitates an education of both heart and mind. - Geshe Lobsang Tenzin Negi, Director

EXPLORE OUR DIVERSE PROGRAMS

This work takes many forms, beginning with a facilitation of Emory College’s academic and cultural exchange programs. Emory offers two unique study abroad programs: the Tibetan Studies Semester Abroad program, and the Tibetan Mind-Body Sciences Summer Abroad program, both offered via a partnership with the Institute of Buddhist Dialectics (IBD) in Dharamsala, India.

Additionally, the Center assists with academic courses related to topics in Tibetan Buddhism, meditation, the psychology of human flourishing, and Tibetan language and culture in the Department of Religion and in Middle-Eastern and South Asian Studies, as well as drawing on its many distinctive relationships to bring visiting scholars, artists, and public figures to Emory’s campus for presentations, workshops, and residencies, including an annual Tibet Week.

The Center for Contemplative Science and Compassion-Based Ethics (CCSBE) has four signature programs: Cognitively-Based Compassion Training (CBCT), the Emory-Tibet Science Initiative (ETSI), Social, Emotional and Ethical Learning (SEE Learning), and University Programs all featured on the Center's website. Additionally, the Center houses the Emory-Tibet Medical Science Initiative (ETMSI), a pioneering program creating a dialogue between allopathic and traditional Tibetan medicine through educational programs and research into traditional Tibetan medicines.

Geshe Lobsang Tenzin Negi, Ph.D. serves as the executive director of the Center for Contemplative Science and Compassion-Based Ethics.
